Program Description: In the setting of a suspected septic transfusion reaction, current AABB criteria can guide the decision-making process about when to culture residual units. However, these criteria as currently defined have some limitations. This program will present data from the SCARED study, a multicenter retrospective study which assessed institutional variability in residual unit and patient culturing practices and the yield of various approaches. Modified criteria are proposed which will improve the sensitivity of detecting a positive culture.
