The growing number of patients with cancer and the care and treatment of such patients presents unique challenges for better utilization of blood products. Anemia and thrombocytopenia are common side effects of chemotherapy treatment in oncology patients which can lead to the need for red cell and platelet transfusions. These hematological disorders and treatment regimens can significantly impact the mortality, morbidity, and quality of life for the patient. In this session, the etiologies of anemia and thrombocytopenia in oncology patients and how it differs from medical patients will be discussed as well as potential patient blood management strategies to improve blood utilization in this unique patient population.
