Program Description: The ABO system is the basis of pre-transfusion testing and blood compatibility. ABO is also a histocompatibility antigen important in organ transplantation. In many tissues, ABO interacts with the Lewis antigen synthesis, affecting the type of ABO and Lewis antigens found in plasma, epithelial cells and red cells. This interaction of ABO and Lewis plays a role in host susceptibility to many diseases. This program will review the serological, biochemical and molecular basis of ABO and Lewis antigen expression. In addition, the clinical significance of antibodies against these carbohydrate antigens will be contrasted.
