Learning ObjectivesAfter participating in this educational activity, participants should be able to:
· Discuss the physiologic basis of applied muscle tensing and fluid replacement as strategies to mitigate vasovagal reactions.
• Describe interventions that have reduced vasovagal reactions in young blood donors.
• Appreciate the effect on rates of vasovagal reactions of implementing a structured program for water and salted snacks distribution and intake monitoring.
Young donors are at higher risk for vasovagal reactions. Adverse reactions have negative consequences as they relate to donor’s experience and retention. Understanding the physiology facilitates the developments of interventions to mitigate the risk. Several blood collection organizations implemented intervention strategies with success. There will be a discussion of interventions taken to reduce vasovagal reactions in young donors
